Rocky Bayou Christian School’s 17 Summer Academy is intended to give High School students an opportunity to take required classes in a condensed 17-day program. This will allow students to take a study hall or advance further in a field of study during the regular school year. Courses will be either a full day (8am-4:30pm) or half day (8am – 12pm).  Full day courses count for 1 full credit while half day courses count for a .5 credit.

Enrollment for the coming summer (2017) will be open from Wednesday, March 1st to Friday, April 28th.

17 is designed to help our regular and advanced track students excel by providing them with more flexibility during the regular school year. Students who wish to make the most of their time at RBCS can find themselves running a very busy, sometimes overwhelming schedule. These are the students for whom 17 was built.

Successful completion of a 17 class frees up a spot in the fall for a study hall. This allows students to take an additional elective, to have time for sports, or to simply cut down on homework.

Every 17 class is a prerequisite for graduation. Each class is designed to cover the same material as the regular school year, with a focus on variety and a mixture of learning techniques created to keep students engaged and focused in a condensed classroom setting.

Our hope is that this will provide you and your students with some much needed space in their schedule. Please prayerfully consider if 17 is the right fit for your family. We are joyfully looking forward to this opportunity to serve.

FAQ's

  • When is registration?
    • Registration will open on Wednesday, March 1st, and will close on Friday, April 28th. Payments may be made via check or credit card. Checks should be made out to RBCS and sent to James Riches. Credit card payments may be made in our Business Office and will incur a 3% convenience fee.
  • How will I register?
    • In order to register, please visit the 17 page, found under “Academics” at rbcs.org.
  • What classes are offered?
    • The 2017 term offers 5 classes: British Literature, Spanish II, Philosophy, Composition I and II, and PE.
  • What is the price of the class?
    • ½ day classes (Philosophy, Comp I&II, PE) are $450
    • Full day classes (British Literature, Spanish II) are $800
  • How is the price of the class determined?
    • Because 17 is offered as an extra opportunity for students which requires additional funds beyond regular tuition, and because 17 does not have scholarships or discounts available, RBCS has decided to offer these classes at a substantial discount compared to regular tuition. Full day classes receive a discount of over 30% compared to regular tuition, while half day classes are offered at a 20% discount.
  • What is the average class size?
    • We are planning on class sizes from 5-10 students.
  • What is the schedule for the class?
    • ½ day classes run from 8-12 daily
    • Full day classes run from 8-4:30 daily
  • What are the beginning and ending dates for the class?
    • Classes will begin the day after Memorial Day, Tuesday, May 30th. The final day of the term will be Wednesday, June 21st.
  • Can my student miss some of the 17 term for a family trip/camp/other event?
    • Due to the nature of the program, it is vital that your student attend all 17 days of the program. Each day will cover an entire week’s worth of work for ½ day classes and 2 weeks’ worth of work for full day classes. Therefore, there is a no-absence policy for the program. If there is an unavoidable illness, students and parents will need to meet with the teacher and administrator to determine whether or not it is possible to complete the class in the time allotted.
  • Will this interfere with other RBCS summer activities?
    • We have tried to work carefully with all other RBCS programs during the summer, and believe we have accommodations for all eventualities. Sports programs will be adjusted according to the student’s availability, and camps should not interfere with the student’s schedule. We will do our best to make sure that there are no conflicts before the term begins. Please contact us with specific inquiries.
  • Do these classes count on my transcript?
    • All 17 classes will be graded and recorded exactly as they are in the regular school year.
  • Can homeschoolers participate?
    • Homeschoolers are welcome and encouraged to participate in the program. Please contact cannonk@rbcs.org with any questions. Registration for the program will be the same as with full time students.
  • How will this class affect my child’s fall schedule?
    • Participants in the 17 program will replace their 17 class with a study hall in the fall. ½ day classes will have study hall for the 1st semester, and then continue with a regular schedule. Full day 17 classes will have a study hall for the entire year.
    • Having an additional study hall will allow students to take an additional elective in the fall.
  • What is the refund policy?
    • Refunds for the 17 program will be offered until May 1st Due to the anticipated small class sizes and the condensed schedule, no refunds will be given after that point. However, students who must withdraw after the refund deadline will not receive a ‘withdraw/fail’ on their record; they will simply need to take the class in the fall.
  • Why aren’t math classes offered with the 17 program?
    • RBCS currently offers several math options outside of the 17 program through the math department and through FLVS. Math is a continual learning process which takes the entire summer, and skipping an entire year of a math would be detrimental to the student’s ability.
Remember:
  • Registration runs from March 1st to April 28th. In order to have your student in a 17 class, you will need to register them and have payment remitted by April 28th.
  • Our refund policy states that refunds for the 17 program will be offered until May 1st Due to the anticipated small class sizes and the condensed schedule, no refunds will be given after that point. However, students who must withdraw after the refund deadline will not receive a ‘withdraw/fail’ on their record; they will simply need to take the class in the fall.
  • If you are paying by credit card, there will be a 3% convenience fee added to the amount.
